  • Manafort pleads not guilty at arraignment in Russia probe

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of bank and tax fraud in special prosecutor Robert Mueller's sprawling Russian Federation meddling probe.

But prosecutors say they were required to bring these charges to Virginia because they lacked venue in the nation's capital.

Judge TS Ellis set the trial to begin July 10.

He appeared in the federal court in Washington on February 28 to plead not guilty to 17 grand jury charges of conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, lying to federal agents and failing to register as a foreign agent.

Manafort and Gates worked for Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russian former Ukrainian president who was attempting to burnish his image in the US and Europe.

Later, announcing the July trial date, Ellis said: " It's not only Mr. Manafort's right to a speedy trial, but it's the public's right as well".

He already pleaded not guilty to another set of charges in Washington, D.C., that are set to go to trial in September.

Separately Thursday, an April 4 hearing was scheduled before a federal judge in Washington in Manafort's civil lawsuit challenging Mueller's appointment as special counsel, which the government has moved to dismiss.

In the DC charges alone, Manafort faces a likely sentence of more than 15 years to nearly 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Prosecutors had offered to combine the indictments in the District, but Manafort refused to do so.

The other former Trump associates who have pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors are Trump's former national security adviser Mike Flynn and ex-campaign adviser George Papadopoulos.

Also waiting was Bill Christeson of Kensington, Md., who said he has followed Manafort to several court appearances and has been hoping to see the longtime lobbyist prosecuted for decades.

The 32-count indictment issued by the Alexandria grand jury accuses Manafort of laundering $30 million through offshore accounts, to disguise income he earned from his work in Ukraine and shield it from federal taxes.

Mueller is investigating alleged Russian interference in the election, possible obstruction of justice, and alleged financial crimes by Manafort and others.
