  • Officials set to unveil new $10 bill featuring Viola Desmond

The Canadian government introduced a new $10 bill featuring civil rights icon Viola Desmond on International Women's day.

The Bank of Canada has hidden an aptly named "Inflation Busters" video game on its website promoting the country's new $10 bill. "And well, I was speechless -my family would have liked that but for once in my life I was speechless", she said.

Desmond's sister, Wanda Robson, was also at Thursday's unveiling and got the first look at the new bill in a video by the Bank of Canada.

The vertical bank note is the same size and functions the same as existing Canadian bank notes.

"It's an important story because it shows that standing up for what we believe, whether it's on the steps of Parliament Hill or in a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, can make our country and our world a better place for future generations", he said.

For background, in November 1946, Desmond was waiting for her vehicle to be repaired after traveling to New Glasgow. Now, 72 years later, Desmond has become the first Black person and the first non-royal woman to be on a regularly-circulated Canada bill.

The purple polymer bill is the first vertically oriented bank note issued in Canada.

The other side of the new bill features the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. In addition, the law stresses the importance of its role in the civil rights movement in Canada.

The segregated theatre relegated black patrons to the balcony, while floor seating was reserved for whites. Her stand predates Rosa Parks' similar action on an Alabama bus by almost a decade.

Desmond, 32, was dragged out of the theatre by police and jailed for defiantly sitting in the "whites only" section of a film house.

In 2010, the government of Nova Scotia issued an apology to Desmond, for prosecuting her and acknowledged her courage in resisting racial discrimination.

Looking to kill time while her vehicle was being repaired, she stopped by a local movie theatre.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you for that", she said on Thursday.
