  • One officer killed in a shooting in Missouri

The other two injured officers were transported to a hospital for treatment for gunshot wounds.

"I am at a loss for words right now", Brittany Seabaugh stated.

Members from the SWAT team discovered the suspect dead in the home shortly after. Sgt. Bill Lowe, Missouri State Highway Patrol said they could not have located him without the help of some new tools. When Morton and two other officers responded to the call, they were met with gunfire at the residence.

The suspect began firing at the officers and subsequently killed Officer Ryan Morton, and wounded two additional officers.

The woman heard in the 911 call was not injured.

"We're still piecing everything together", Sgt. Bill Lowe, from Missouri State Highway Patrol, told ABC News.

The women in the house at the time were not injured and were taken into custody.

After confirming the address with dispatch, officers entered the home, which is where they encountered 37-year-old James E. Waters, who fired at the officers and killed Officer Christopher Ryan Morton. Most recently Waters had been arrested in November 2017 for unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. When police responded to the scene they found the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence in the small town of Clinton, about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City. "Especially for this community, they're going to have to have another healing process take place", Lowe said. He attended Knob Noster High School and later studied at the University of Central Missouri. "When (the officers) entered that house they were doing what they needed to ensure no one was hurt and there wasn't any other problems".

Morton had worked for the Clinton Police Department before Michael's death and returned to the department after he had died, Lowe said.

Lowe said Wednesday that further investigation traced the phone number from the 911 call to a Windsor, Missouri, address - not the Clinton home that police were sent to.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is waiting for an autopsy to determine Waters's official cause of death. Many officers engaged in a shootout. They then regrouped so they could go back into the house. It remains unclear how he died, Lowe said.

Details continue to emerge following an officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of Clinton officer Ryan Morton, 30, Tuesday night.

"Our community has lost another public servant due to a police officer involved shooting".

The identity of the shooter was also not known at the time of publishing the story.
