  • Memo: No Tanks, 'Older' Aircraft at Trump's Military Parade

The Pentagon appears ready to fulfill President Donald Trump's dream of carrying out a military parade in Washington D.C., according to a guidance memo from the Office of the Secretary of Defense obtained by NBC News on Friday.

The parade, the first major one in the United States capital since 1991, will take place on November 11 in a salute to veterans, according to a Pentagon planning memo.

Medal of Honour recipients and veterans' organisations are to be included in the march, which, according to the memo, will feature a heavy dose of history.

Female veterans will be highlighted, and marchers representing previous wars will wear period uniforms, including historical dress from the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps.

The parade will be merged with the existing Veteran's Day Parade.

"Include wheeled vehicles only, no tanks - consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure", the memo said.

The White House announced a month ago that Trump had asked for a large-scale military parade, an unconventional call that immediately fueled comparisons with similar events in more autocratic countries.

His inaugural committee reportedly explored, but rejected, the idea of highlighting military equipment in his inaugural parade.

Trump was delighted by France's Bastille Day celebration during a visit to Paris last July, and praised the parade months later, saying, "We're going to have to try and top it".

The suggested plans do, however, call for a representation of veterans across USA history and an air demonstration, according to a note from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis's office at the Pentagon.

While the Pentagon memo did not include a cost estimate, the White House budget director recently told Congress taxpayers can expect to fork over $10 million and $30 million.

Since taking office, Trump has frequently touted his support for the U.S. military and placed high-ranking generals in top White House and cabinet posts.

Trump, who did not serve in the Vietnam war after receiving five draft deferments, has long spoken of his admiration for military figures such as Gen George Patton and frequently makes reference to "my generals".
