BJP fields 18 candidates for RS polls

The BJP today announced the names of 18 candidates, including former Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane, for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from nine states.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda has filed his nomination papers as the BJP candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will contest from Uttar Pradesh and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad from Bihar. As per the schedule, if needed be, polling will be held on 23 March while all processes of election will be completed by 26 March.

Nadda's re-election to RajyaSabha was nearly certain as in the 68-member house, the BJP has a two-thirds majority with 44 seats.

Party President and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao named Joginapalli Santosh Kumar, Banda Prakash Mudiraj and Badugula Lingaiah Yadav as the candidates.

BJP has made a decision to field Rajeev Chandrasekhar for the Rajya Sabha election from Karnataka.

Ketkar, a veteran Marathi journalist and a staunch BJP critic, will fight on a Congress ticket from Maharashtra.

Prominent names in the list include Konkan strongman Narayan Rane (Maharashtra), who quit Congress past year, Kirori Lal Meena (Rajasthan), BJP's prominent TV-face GVL Narasimha Rao (Uttar Pradesh), National General Secretary Anil Jain (UP) and national media coordinator Anil Baluni (Uttarakhand).

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi will contest from West Bengal, where he will be supported by the state's ruling TMC. Senior UP BJP leader JPS Rathore when contacted said, "In this Rajya Sabha elections, a candidate needs 37 first preference votes to emerge victorious".

While, Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), Janta Dal (United) were the other parties who announced the names of the candidates for Rajya Sabha. He has been a parliament member since 2006. Last date for filing nomination was March 12 while scrutiny of paperswould be done next day, Mr Rai said adding that willing candidates couldwithdraw their nominations by March 15. This despite the lobbying in New Delhi for former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, who also belongs to the same sub-sect, for this seat.
