Valspar Championship: Tiger Woods 'right there' entering final round

  • Charting Tiger Woods skyrocketing odds to win The Masters

Birdies at the ninth and 10th followed but he stalled briefly after a bogey four at the par-three 13th.

Woods has never been so close to winning since his last victory in the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone in 2013.

"That was sweet", Woods said.

England's Rose shot into contention after holing out for eagle from 120 yards at the par-five 11th. Instead of wilting under the pressure of a spot on the leaderboard alongside Tiger Woods, the Canadian steeled his nerves and shot a 3-under 68 that included six birdies.

"You can't ignore it, I guess", said the former Kent State All-American of the looming presence of Woods and the chaos that goes with it.

"I keep getting a little bit better here and there, making these little subtle tweaks", said Woods, who was sidelined for all of 2016 before an abortive comeback bid a year ago. "I think two or three times on the golf course our paths crossed, there's a lot more fuss going on the periphery". I was hoping something to take the pain away, I should get up out of bed and walk again. I'm excited. I've been ready to go.

He drained a putt from 22 feet for birdie at No. 10 underneath an overcast sky similar in color to his dark gray slacks and cap, contrasting Woods' bright pink Nike shirt that helped him stand out in a crowd even more than normal.

"I came out and tried to have as much fun as possible", he said. "Got off to a good start", he said. "There's so many guys (who) played their way back up into this tournament", Woods said.

Woods has been slowed by mistakes, some leading to big numbers the last time he played at the Honda Classic. "I know it's packed up there, but at least I got a shot". How do people even see the ball until it hits on the green? "Every putt I had I thought it was going to go in".

Woods recorded five birdies and one bogey on his way to a four-under 67. "He's back in action and everyone's rooting for him".

"The roars are a little louder, and there's certainly an energy about the gallery that you don't have anywhere else", Jordan Spieth said.

Watch the final round of the Valspar Championship live on Sunday from 5pm on Sky Sports Golf and 6.30pm on Sky Sports Main Event.

There was plenty to delight those who came out to cheer for Woods as the 42-year-old carded a four-under 67, earning a share of second with playing partner Brandt Snedeker (67) and Justin Rose (66).
