  • A Red Cross worker helps former SS guard Oskar Groening right leaves the court after the verdict of his trial

Oskar Groening, the former Auschwitz guard convicted in his 90s for his role in the murder of 300,000 Hungarian Jews at the concentration camp, has died in Germany. All of his appeals were rejected and he was due to begin a four-year prison term soon.

The district court of Lueneburg, in 2015, sentenced Groening to four years' imprisonment for aiding murder during the Holocaust.

Groening admitted he was morally guilty for the work he carried out at Auschwitz, which included sending bank notes he found in Jews' luggage to SS offices in Berlin, where they helped to fund the Nazi war effort.

There were several occasions when he was assigned to "ramp duty", which involved processing new arrivals.

Mr Groening's court case was seen as one of the last major cases related to the Holocaust, where some 6 million Jews were murdered by Adolf Hitler's regime. At his trial, he said he witnessed individual atrocities, but did not acknowledge participating in any crimes.

He said he was "very sorry" for his actions.

"I know that. I sincerely regret not having lived up to this realisation earlier and more consistently".

Groening was a German SS member who was stationed at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

In 2011, former OH autoworker John Demjanjuk became the first person convicted in Germany exclusively for serving as a death camp guard without evidence of being involved in a specific killing.

German prosecutors deemed Groening to be fit enough to go to prison as long as there was appropriate medical care.

The end of limbo in Germany?

The 96-year-old former "Bookkeeper of Auschwitz" died before starting his jail sentence for participation in the Holocast, according to a Sunday report.
