Venus Williams upstages Serena in third-round blockbuster at Indian Wells

  • Williams sisters set to face off at BNP Paribas Open

It was their earliest meeting since a 17-year-old Venus beat 16-year-old Serena in the second round of the 1998 Australian Open.

Wozniacki silenced the critics earlier this year when she claimed her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, becoming the first Danish woman to win a major.

Despite the positive progress, Serena displayed her trademark hunger and disdain for losing.

But this night belonged to Aunt Venus.

Venus raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set after breaking her sister twice and had a match point at 5-3 which Serena saved, before Venus saved a break point of her own at 5-4 and went on to take the match. The struggle continuing before Venus drew first blood in game six after a couple of unforced errors from Serena.

Few have handled Serena - the record 23-time grand slam victor - as well as Venus, as evidenced by their head-to-head record. That alone would explain the hype surrounding the match and the atmosphere of the 29th Sister Act, in the same stadium where Venus announced a walkover for a tendonitis in 2001.

It marked the first time Venus had beaten Serena in straight sets since the 2008 Wimbledon final. She emphatically closed out the 36-minute set with back-to-back aces that clocked 108 miles per hour and 120 miles per hour.

"I always know that it's never over until it's over", she said."She kept roaring back, I'm just lucky that I've played more matches than her right now". "She served very consistently". Yeah, she's already the greatest of all time when it comes to women's tennis, but he reminded her that she's also the world's greatest mom. Helped by a ideal dropshot, Serena broke back to cut Venus' lead down to 3-2. But Serena cracked a backhand victor down the line for deuce.

Wozniacki said the court conditions were hard but she managed to make adjustments.

Serena held to trail 5-4 with an ace and a clean victor.

What followed was another epic game as the score swung backwards and forwards before Serena held a break point only to be denied by a Venus ace.

"I have a lot to improve on", she said. "I'm in the margin, at least".

'So I have just got to keep saying at each tournament that my goal is just to be better than the last. "We weren't sure if they're going to play as long as we hoped them to play". "It's just afterwards I don't like it as much".

It was obvious at the net when they greeted each other with a one-arm hug and neither smiled.

If Wozniacki wins in Indian Wells she will reclaim it.

Typically, the sisters wouldn't meet until the later rounds of a tournament.

One would think losing to a loved one could soften the blow of defeat, especially coming off a year out of action, but Serena Williams is wired differently. Venus is seeded eighth. "Just have to go out there and see how I am and do my best". First of all, 17 years ago seems like forever ago.

The sisters have often said the other tennis playing sibling is their toughest opponent.

The crowd's treatment led to a 14-year boycott by the sisters, which Serena finally ended in 2015. They are both over 35, 36, and still basically playing at the top.

Richard Williams told USA Today he suffered racial abuse and Venus would later say "she heard whatever he heard".
