The demonstrators also blocked access to the Golden 1 Center, preventing some fans from attending a Sacramento Kings game. The basketball game eventually was played, but with few spectators as the doors to the arena were locked. The Kings eventually chose to start playing even though many fans were blocked from entering, leaving the arena mostly empty during the game.

Sacramento police say two officers responded after 9 p.m. Sunday to reports of an unidentified man breaking vehicle windows.

Hundreds of people rallied for Stephon Clark, a 22-year-old who was shot Sunday in the backyard of his grandparents' home.

Stephon Clark, 22, was living with relatives in a south Sacramento house when the police responded to a 911 call about a man breaking auto windows and a glass door in the neighborhood.

Officers called for Clark to stop and show his hands before one of them shouted, "gun, gun, gun".

Investigators are looking into whether the officers, who were searching the neighborhood for several minutes for a suspect, announced to Clark that they were police, Matthew said.

The officers believed it was a firearm and feared for their safety, the department said. Police had been called to check reports of someone breaking into cars.

Protesters marched from Sacramento City Hall onto a nearby motorway on Thursday, disrupting rush hour traffic and holding signs with messages including "Sac PD: Stop killing us!".

At other points, protesters surrounded Sacramento police officers and delayed public transportation.

"We never said he had a gun".

Outside the arena, protesters linked arms and chanted at fans, "Join us or go home!" In a body camera, audio recording the officers are only heard identifying themselves after firing on Clark, according to a report by the Washington Post.

"When you look at the facts here, Clark had no gun, he had no weapon, he made no threats".

About seven uneventful minutes into the footage, the officers broke into a jog, running past unlit houses or dimly lit windows, and headed to another house.

Steinberg said appropriate questions have been raised about the protocols for using force and rendering emergency aid during police shootings and they must be answered in the investigation.

Police released body camera footage from the shooting on Wednesday night as well as thermal-imaging video from a Sacramento Sheriff's Department helicopter, which shows Clark running from a neighbor's yard and onto his grandmother's property.

"This family completely rejects anything that the Sacramento Police Department tried to claim to justify this execution of their loved one", said Benjamin Crump, the family's attorney. Police said the man "turned and advanced toward the officers while holding an object" extended in front of him.

"This is an epic day for black Sacramento", Brrazey Liberty, a musician and Black Lives Matter activist told The Sacramento Bee. City Councilman Larry Carr decried the loss of life and said police must provide timely information.

Officers involved have been put on paid leave as the city investigates the shooting.
