Why is Trump so afraid of Russia?

  • Trump explains why he congratulated Putin for election win, says other presidents lacked 'chemistry' with Russian leader

US President Donald Trump stridently defended his much-criticized overtures to Russian strongman Vladimir Putin Wednesday, as White House anxiety over his embrace spilled into full public view. John McCain, R-Ariz., who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee and has pressed the Trump administration to respond aggressively to Russia's interference in the USA presidential election. The result of the election, however, was never in doubt, given Putin's autocratic stranglehold on power.

In a pair of tweets on his call with Mr Putin, Mr Trump said United States news organisations "wanted me to excoriate him. Leaking such information is a fireable offense and likely illegal", a senior White House official, who requested anonymity, said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said as per the outcome of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's recent visit to Namibia, the two countries have agreed to strengthen their mutually beneficial relations in trade, as well as the economy, investment, culture and other areas of mutual cooperation.

"At the moment, we are not actively inclined to dissuade people from going", said Johnson, but he acknowledged the fears over safety - at the European Championships in France in 2016, organised gangs of Russian hooligans targeted and assaulted groups of England fans.

"An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections", the veteran member of Congress said.

Administration officials said it was unclear if the President had seen the briefing memo that was leaked to the Post.

"We recognise that the 2018 midterm, and future elections, are clearly potential targets for Russian hacking attempts", she said.

"Having a good relationship with Russian Federation is a good thing, not a bad thing", the president-elect argued in January.

In private, Trump reportedly has told officials and outside advisers that he thinks the leak was part of a maneuver to undermine him by "the deep state", AP reported.

During the call, Mr Trump did not mention the issue that has sparked growing Western tensions with Moscow - the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Britain.

Russian Federation has lashed out at Boris Johnson comparing Vladimir Putin's promotion of the FIFA World Cup to Adolf Hitler using the 1936 Olympics for Nazi propaganda. He was also concerned about the leak as he believed continuing to leak things out is unsafe.

In addition to McCain, Trump was slammed by many Democrats but many Republicans as well including Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn and Susan Collins of ME, to name just a few.

For critics, Trump's call offered Putin legitimacy while giving him a wedge to drive between Western allies and within the White House itself.

However, Trump had to soon after the conversation, defend his phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and said that getting along with Russia is a good thing, and not a bad thing. Trump demeaned the office of the presidency by congratulating a power-hungry individual who has vowed to resurrect the old Soviet Union.

Trump and Putin last met in Vietnam during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The talks, while brief, looked friendly.

CLEVELAND, Ohio- Early in the 2016 presidential election, candidate Trump claimed it was rigged.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called the leak a "bigger outrage" than Trump's congratulations for Putin.
