Your 'hidden' iPhone notifications can be outed by blabbermouth Siri

  • All you need to do to see these hidden messages is ask Siri to read them out loud

Some iPhone users have had quite a shock lately, as a bug has been causing the device's voice assistant, Siri, to read out hidden lock screen notifications to nearly anyone that asks.

But it turns out there's a very simple way to read these hidden notifications even if you can't unlock the phone: Just ask Siri to read them to you. So till this bug is active, Siri can read out all notifications on the iPhone X even without the owner's permission.

Apple has already issued a statement that says it is "aware" of the bug and is now working on a fix. Apple in the statement said,"We are aware of the issue and it will be addressed in an upcoming software update". However, we have also experienced that Apple fixes its bugs and loopholes pretty quickly, patching whatever vulnerability or exploit which is present in the operating system.

But the feature has been around for a while, previously allowing users to manually change their settings to hide notification previews. But if you use an alternative email app like Gmail, Siri will include those in the notifications it's willing to read.

In a test, MacRumors reproduced this issue on an iPhone X running both iOS 11.2.6 and the latest iOS 11.3 beta, while confirming that it does not affect iMessage.

Many privacy conscious users have configured their iPhone settings so that any incoming notifications won't be displayed on the device's lock screen.

Gadgets Now tried it and was able to replicate the issue in the company's most advanced smartphone - iPhone X.

This isn't a case where Siri is recognizing a user's voice before talking.

Now have someone send you a WhatsApp text and then ask Siri to "read my notifications". You can also disable lock screen notifications on a per-app basis by going to Settings Notifications and then select a specific app.

Thankfully there are some basic settings that can prevent Siri from reading out your personal messages without authentication, but it takes a toll at some of your convenience.
