  • Ready for take-off: Qantas launches first non-stop flight between Europe and Australia

The firm hopes to routinely fly non-stop from Australia to London and NY by 2022, which would take 20 hours.

Operated by a Boeing 787-9, the flight reduces total travel time by eliminating stopovers and taking advantage of the most favourable winds on any given day without having to factor in a mid-point in the Middle East or Asia when choosing a flight path.

The world's longest regular passenger flight is operated by Qatar Airways between Doha and Auckland, at 9,025 miles. Using Airbus A340 airliners, the route from Singapore to New York's Newark airport was operational from 2004 to 2013.

The return flight QF10 will depart Heathrow for Perth at 13:30 local time today.

It is hoped that these kinds of services will encourage more people to travel to the likes of Sydney and Melbourne, with the Western Australian government keen to attract more tourists to the region.

To succeed, the route must defy the boom-and-bust commodities cycle that has preyed on Western Australia. This means that for the first time in history, Australia and #great britain are connected via a direct air route, bringing both nations closer together.

On the flight were over 220 people, a lot of them were paying passengers and Qantas CEO Alan Joyce also was one of the first people to ever fly non-stop from Australia to Great Britain.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, who was one of the passengers on the inaugural flight, described it as a major milestone for Australia as well as global aviation.

As the world's number one travel agency to Australia, Flight Centre has seen high demand for the new service and has already sold enough seats to fill one and a half Qantas 787 Dreamliners before the flight has launched.

If it is possible, Qantas will call for tenders next year, with the aircraft likely to be ready by 2022.

The Qantas 9 flight touched down at Heathrow's Terminal Three at 5.02am at the end of a historic journey that begun in Perth yesterday.

"They're targeting the business community that wants a seamless journey", said Rico Merkert, professor of transport and supply-chain management at the University of Sydney's business school.

Meanwhile, Qantas has challenged Airbus and Boeing to produce an aircraft capable of flying direct from Sydney and Melbourne to London and NY.
