VISA Applications May Require Five Years of Social Media Information

  • The proposed new requirements will affect nearly 15 million foreigners who apply for visas to enter the US each year

Only applicants for certain diplomatic and official visa types may be exempted from the requirements, the documents said.

The proposal would require almost 15 million immigrant and nonimmigrant visa applicants to provide "identifiers" for multiple social media platforms they used during the previous five years. It expands the Trump administration's plan to evaluate threats and benefits associated with potential immigrants and visitors.

The extreme vetting proposals are listed in two documents set to be published online Friday, marking a short period before the federal government finalizes the measures.

The change could affect more than 14 million Visa applicants, according to Bloomberg.

The move by the Trump administration stops short of requiring passwords or access to those social media accounts, although then-Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly suggested previous year that it was being considered.

It's perhaps worth noting that Russian hackers penetrated the Department of State's email system in 2014, and in 2016, the State Department's Office of Inspector General (OIG) gave the agency dismal marks for both its physical and cybersecurity competency.

The new rules would apply to virtually all applicants for immigrant and non-immigrant visas.

The department estimated that 710,000 immigrant visa applicants and 14 million non-immigrant visa applicants would be affected.

Other questions seek five years of previously used telephone numbers, email addresses and worldwide travel whether the visa applicant has been deported or removed from any country and whether specified family members have been involved in terrorist activities, said the document which would be formally published today.

President Trump's administration declared that it intends to gather the social media history of nearly everybody who wants a visa to enter the US.

The handful of comments submitted so far decry the proposed changes.
