The Apple CEO also attacked Facebook's advertising business model and called for increased regulation of social media. He also hit out at Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Zuckerberg is trying to steer Facebook through one of its worst public crises, after revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm that worked on US President Donald Trump's election campaign, obtained the private data of some 50 million Facebook users.

Zuckerberg acknowledged that Facebook's current problems are in part due to the fact that the company was primarily focused on connecting people during the first decade of its existence, without paying enough attention to negative side-effects.

"The reality here is that if you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world, then there are a lot of people who can't afford to pay", Zuckerberg said.

The verbal jabs revolve around Facebook's business model, which is built off your data to craft targeted ads.

Zuckerberg said Amazon's Jeff Bezos had an "excellent saying on this" when launching the Kindle a few years ago: "'There are companies that work hard to charge you more, and there are companies that work hard to charge you less".

Mark Zuckerberg is firing back at Tim Cook.

In light of all that - and we're only scratching the surface when it comes to privacy-related incidents and uncomfortable truths Zuckerberg has had to answer for - it sure sounds extremely glib to pretend that Facebook cares about user privacy as much as Apple, or that Cook's remarks are out of place and "not aligned with the truth".

Today, an interview with Mark Zuckerberg was published in Vox and included his response to Cook's statement. A day after, Cook said he "wouldn't be in this situation" if he were in Zuckerberg's shoes, in an interview with United States media outlets Recode and MSNBC.

If taken at face value, Zuckerberg's claim that users share information because they trust Facebook to protect it could spell trouble for the company now that that trust has been rocked by scandal. "We've elected not to do that". Taken together, a series of steps over the past couple of weeks will make advertising on Facebook potentially more cumbersome and less efficient for marketers. I think it's the most ridiculous concept. " Cook took the opportunity to emphasize Apple's message about user privacy, noting the company sells products to people, "it doesn't sell users to advertisers". Zuckerberg went on to label the Cambridge Analytica "quiz app" that gathered users' personal information a "breach of trust" and made a promise to "do better for you".
