Democrats had offered at one point to fully fund the wall but rescinded the offer in January, accusing Trump of reneging on elements of a tentative agreement. In a response to Trump's tweets, the No. 2 US Senate Democrat on Monday blamed the president for the collapse in immigration negotiations.

"Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release". He added, "Act now, Congress, our country is being stolen".

On Monday, Mr. Trump tweeted that "Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large "Caravans" of people enter their country".

Trump wrote: "Mexico is doing very little, if not NOTHING, at stopping people from flowing into Mexico through their Southern Border, and then into the U.S. They laugh at our dumb immigration laws".

It was Trump who last fall canceled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which was begun in the Obama administration to provide temporary protection to dreamers.

Lawmakers from both parties on several occasions had presented Trump with possible solutions for the Dreamers, but he never accepted any of them because they either didn't allot sufficient money to build the controversial wall on the Mexican border or didn't ban the current system of immigrant family reunification, or what he calls "chain migration".

President Donald Trump declared as "dead" on Monday a program that protects immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children and pressed Congress to "immediately" pass legislation to secure the USA border with Mexico.

Trump tweeted that the USA must build a border wall, but argued that "Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!"

It was one takeaway from a long holiday break, during which Trump surrounded himself with the type of unwavering allies he's struggled to find in Washington, people familiar with their conversations said.

"But on Sunday, he indicated that the time had passed, writing on Twitter: "'Caravans' coming.

"Fox & Friends" aired a segment earlier Sunday morning about Central American migrants traveling through Mexico en route to the United States.

A group called Pueblo Sin Frontera, or People Without Borders, organized the mass movement through Mexico as a way of helping Central American migrants avoid criminal gangs and harassment by authorities as they trek to the USA border. New DACA applications are not being accepted. "With all of the money they make from the USA, hopefully they will stop people from coming through their country and into ours, at least until Congress changes our immigration laws!"

The Obama administration allowed the release of immigrants seeking asylum in the United States if they did not pose a danger to the community and were not a flight risk.

Those enrolled in DACA had pinned their hopes on Democrats, who had continuously promised to win permanent legal status for them.

U.S. President Donald Trump waves to the media as he arrives with first lady Melania Trump at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, U.S., after the Easter weekend in Palm Beach, Florida, April 1, 2018. "Remember, today is Easter Sunday", tweeted Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Trump critic who challenged him for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

Despite Trump's overtures to congressional Democrats on immigration, no deal has materialized. "Sinclair is far superior to CNN and even more Fake NBC, which is a total joke", tweeted the president about criticism over a message Sinclair Broadcast Group had local news anchors deliver to their regional audiences.

Finally, the president tweeted about "unredacted documents requested by Congress", calling it "an embarrassment to our country!" "An inaccurate news report should not serve to question this strong cooperation", he wrote on Twitter, apparently referring to the Fox News story.

Former deputy attorney general Sally Yates, who Trump fired at the beginning of his presidency, expressed disapproval of the president's tweet. "Upholding human dignity and rights is not at odds with the rule of law".
