The title came 17 years to the day after Notre Dame (35-3) won its only other championship in 2001 on Easter. A couple of Mississippi State players had already headed for the locker room, while Notre Dame players celebrated. They had plenty of possessions, but the second the ball was inbounded, every Irish player had maroon and white in her face.

If you love sports but you've limited yourself to just men's sports for whatever reason, you're missing out on a lot.

You know the rest now.

The coach did at least partially attribute the shot to some divine intervention. Arike Ogunbowale's three-point buzzer beater lifted Notre Dame to a 61-58 win over Mississippi State Sunday night marking the biggest comeback in women's national championship game history.

Ogunbowale's off-balance 3-pointer in the title game capped a record comeback by Notre Dame and an incredible weekend for the sport. "If there is attention being brought to women's basketball, I'm happy for that, period".

"I didn't want to give them a chance to get the ball", Ogunbowale said after the game.

After a women's tournament and a Final Four like those we had this year, the excuses for not watching ― that the basketball is not high enough quality, that there isn't enough drama, that the athleticism is lacking, that no one dunks ― are harder to make. She had a feeling the second time around. Ogunbowale scored on a three-point play, and Jessica Shepard, who led Notre Dame with 19 points, tied the score at 41 heading into the fourth quarter.

On Sunday, they proved their resilience once again.

In the third quarter, Notre Dame was down 15 points, and with less than 2 minutes in the game, they were down by five.

More news: Great weather for the holiday weekend

The play was created to get the ball to Jessica Shepard, who led Notre Dame with 19 points, but inbounder Jackie Young told Ogunbowale beforehand to be ready.

"It just felt right", Ogunbowale said of the shot.

"Ice water in her veins", said Bartel. Her father, Gregory, was a footballer in Nigeria and once served in the Nigerian Army before he relocated to the United States. It's been even longer since a title game came down to a last-second shot. Marina Mabrey contributed 10 points along with seven rebounds.

"It's unbelievable", McGraw said. And we just kept fighting. Relentless, competitive, they have a swagger.

With two shots in a span of 48 hours, Notre Dame junior guard Arike Ogunbowale cemented her name amongst college basketball's greatest performers ever.

It was the second straight game that Ogunbowale hit a shot in the final second to carry the Irish.

"I was just like, 'Wow, '" MSU senior Morgan William said. I wanted to go into business and they have the No. 1 business school.

So when are the Kings and the city of Sacramento going to bid for a women's Final Four? "I'll wear that maybe for the rest of my career".

"It hurts right now", Bulldogs coach Vic Schaefer said. "Pat her on the butt, man". Of course, they made sure to say it twice.
