  • Abe to Ask Trump to Address N Korea's Abductions During Talks With Kim - Reports

The White House said on Monday that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was to visit the United States on April 17-18 on issues including the Korean Peninsula and trade.

The president previously hosted Abe at Mar-a-Lago in February of 2017. In Trump's recent imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, Japan was not given any exemption even if it is one of Washington's top allies.

President Trump and Prime Minister Abe will also explore ways to expand fair and reciprocal trade and investment ties between the United States and Japan, two of the worlds wealthiest and most innovative economy.

Abe has said he wants to remind Trump of shorter-range missiles and other North Korean security threats for Japan, and seek US help on the issue of Japanese abducted by North Korea decades ago.

"There's absolutely no need to rush things", the Japanese foreign minister said, adding that North Korea may take advantage of countries heeding invitations to send their leaders to Pyongyang for talks. Japan says 17 people were abducted.

The discussions come a time when Trump is seeking to change the USA trading relationships across the globe, claiming that Japan among other countries has long taken advantage of the United States.

"I am planning to visit Mar-a-Lago in Florida and hold Japan-U.S. summit talks for two days over matters of mutual interest, including the issue of North Korea", Abe told a meeting of senior Japanese government leaders on Friday, the Japan Times reported.

In a statement, the White House did not mention the abduction issue.

Meanwhile, India is set to organise a trilateral dialogue with delegates from the US and Japan in New Delhi ahead of the Trump-Abe meeting, the US State Department said.
