Intel claims the CPU will offer a 29% overall performance boost, a hefty 41% gaming frame rate increase, and 59% faster 4K video-editing speeds compared to the top-specced 7th-gen Intel Core i7.

Intel calls the eighth generation Core i9 "the highest-performance laptop processor Intel has ever built", emphasizing both the gaming and content creation capabilities of the new chip.

Unlike the U series chips, the new i9 processors are part of the H series of the manufacturer. Intel also has a new Data acceleration feature that delivers a performance boost to the slower and larger HDD data drives, which most people use as secondary storage in a PC. All Intel 8th Generation Core i5, i7 and i9 CPU's featuring Optane will carry a new Core i+ brand. With TurboBoost 2.0, Intel says single-core clock speeds can climb up to 4.8GHz, which is nothing to stick your nose up at. Intel went on to state what consumers could expect with the new processors.

Rumors that Intel's first Coffee Lake Core i9 processor would be made for laptops have been around since November a year ago. Intel first revealed its 18 core Core i9 Extreme chip, aimed at desktop PCs, nearly a year ago now.

For one thing, the company's new 300-series mobile chipset will have built-in Intel 802.11ac wireless, which I've generally found more reliable than the competition. The new processors feature up to six cores, which is a first for the company's mobile lineup.

Another premiere in the world of CPUs is that the 9th generation i9 is the first chip that comes in six cores and twelve threads setting.

Intel did not discuss pricing, but we don't expect the Core i9-8950HK to be an low-cost option by any means.

I imagine this probably because Intel wants to keep the turbo frequency of up to 5.0Ghz and beyond for the next model. In addition, the introduction of new mobile chips could mean some tantalizing sales on previous generation systems.

Intel also introduced some new designations, including Core i5+, Core i7+, and Core i9+, as shown above.

Speaking of labels, if you see a "Core i5+" or "Core i7+" on your next computer, you should know it's not a new kind of chip - it's merely marketing shorthand to indicate those PCs include an Intel Optane memory module to make their sluggish hard drives feel faster. The new memory results in 1.3 times better data writing performance along with retrieval related tasks and 4.7 times faster level loading in games, the chip maker claims.
