  • ESPN to launch standalone sports streaming service on April 12th

ESPN+ will be powered by BAMTech and will include live sports, original content and a library of on-demand programming.

While there isn't a definitive listing of all the programming that will make its way to ESPN+, the company did list a wide range of content that will be making its way to the platform like MLB, NHL, Top Rank Boxing, MLS, college sport, PGA Tour, Grand Slam, rugby, cricket, and more.

In addition, sports fans can purchase the entire MLB.TV out-of-market package via ESPN+, viewing the games within the ESPN App. MLB.TV will cost an additional $24.99 per month.

ESPN, the Walt Disney-owned media brand, says ESPN+ will be an integrated part of a completely redesigned and reimagined ESPN App - an "all-in-one digital sports platform for fans".

On Tuesday, ESPN announced that as part of its "re-imagined app" it will be launching a subscription-based streaming service called ESPN+.

The launch comes as part of ESPN's major shift into the over-the-top (OTT) sports sector, which was sparked into life previous year by The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of live streaming specialist BAMTech, which is powering ESPN Plus. ESPN+ will also offer year-round boxing coverage - including exclusive main event fights like Amir Khan vs. Phil Lo Greco on April 21 - as well as more than 250 MLS games and thousands of college sporting events across two dozen conferences. Customers can access it either through the ESPN app or ESPN.com.

Live sports rights have been a sticking point for the service. On the MLB front, there'll be an ESPN+ MLB game every day throughout the regular season, for a total of more than 180 games.

ESPN announced on Monday that it will officially launch its own streaming service next week, on April 12th 2018 to be exact. A similar offering will also launch ahead of the National Hockey League season. The other, a family-friendly service filled with original and licensed programming from across Lucasfilm, Marvel and Pixar, is expected to launch in 2019.

The network opted to name the service "ESPN+" which is read as "ESPN plus".

Users do not need a cable subscription to subscribe to ESPN+. But, topheavy with b-grade content from some of its lesser channels, that's not what this new ESPN+ product offers. Fans of Olympic sports will also get hundreds of wrestling, swimming and diving, gymnastics, and ice hockey events from a variety of conference partners nationwide exclusively on ESPN+. ESPN also promises PGA golf coverage, Grand Slam tennis matches and worldwide sports like rugby and cricket will be part of its monthly streaming package.
