There were 15 murders in London in February, compared to 14 in NY.

London's murder rate has grown by almost 40 percent in three years, while police figures show that New York's has fallen by 87 percent since 1990, raising pressure on mayor Sadiq Khan and Metropolitan Police chief Cressida Dick.

London Met Police said that a 17-year-old girl died after she was found with gunshot wounds in Tottenham.

The Sunday Times over the weekend reported that London's murder rate surpassed that suffered in New York City "for the first time in modern history", pointing out that the UK's capital saw 22 killings so far this month while Gotham experienced 21, with both metropolises about equal in population.

According to the Sunday Times, 15 people were murdered in London in February, while 14 were killed in NY.

A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan police told the Independent that his department is concerned about the unexpected murder increase.

Mayor Sadiq Khan announced around the New Year that there would be a "significant increase" in targeted stop and searches by police in London.

A massive decline in crime has helped to transform New York City: In 1990, of 2,245 people were murdered.

A stabbing in south London has brought the number of fatal knife attacks in the capital to 31 this year.

By 1998, the number of murders had dropped to 629, with a slight uptick to 649 in 2001.

Unlike the United States, most murders in the United Kingdom are committed with knives and other non-firearm weapons. Why is London seeing such an increase while NY has seen a significant decrease?

Scotland Yard has come under fire for the politically-driven reduction of its stop-and-search operations which has undermined law enforcement efforts to prevent the knife attacks plaguing London in recent years. While New York City also has strict gun laws, numerous murders there are shootings.

POLICE IN LONDON are investigating after a teenage girl was killed and a boy injured in separate shooting incidents in the city last night.
