What do the companies have to reveal? This matches the mean national pay gap pay, and is only 1 per cent better than the median national pay gap.

One of the highest gaps appears to be between male and female employees at the Osborne Co-Operative Academy Trust based at St Clere's school in Stanford-le-Hope. The airline employs women in many areas that traditionally have been male-dominated, including pilots, engineering and roles within the ramp team, such as baggage handling and aircraft loading.

On a mean basis, the gap in average hourly pay was 8.4%, and 41.4% when looking at bonuses alone. In every other division, men are paid significantly more.

However, many employers have revealed the difference in their companies is greater than this.

Numerous companies with the biggest mean gender pay gaps are British soccer clubs.

The UK is one of the first countries in the world to require companies to submit the data. The entire aim is to encourage women to be part of the employment process with the same remuneration as men. At the University of East London (UEL) women earned 8.7pc less then men per hour on average.

"The clock is quickly ticking down for large employers to report their gender pay gap data".

On Tuesday morning, 8,874 of the more than 9,000 employers affected by the regulation had filed their figures to the United Kingdom gender pay gap service, which allows employees to check their company's record.

Bonus pay is given to 32% of male employees and 29% of female employees.

Equal pay, the idea that people who do the same job should be paid the same amount, has been legally enforced in the United Kingdom since 1970.

KFC, Matalan, Starbucks, Costa, McDonald's and Primark, British Museum and the armed forces have no gender pay gap.

Has the pay gap reporting process uncovered any discriminatory practices in relation to pay, which could be a legal equal pay issue?

The annual salary paid to EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren was cut by £34,000 ($48,000) to £706,000 ($994,000) in January.

There are signs the approach may be working - several organizations, including the BBC and EasyJet (ESYJY), have taken very public steps in recent months to remedy pay inequity.

The Council puts the gap down to the roles in which male and females work within, and the salaries that those roles attract. "The idea that women don't want high-paid roles is for the birds", she says.

Jack Sealy, which supplies air and power tools, also had a negative gap - its mean average showed women were paid 2% more, though its median favoured men by 3.9%.
