The news has however sparked concerns amongst some royal fans that Philip may not be fit to attend his grandson, Prince Harry's, wedding in May.

PRINCE Philip is in "good spirits" after undergoing a successful surgery on his hip, Buckingham Palace has said.

Back in August 2017, the Duke retired from 65 decades of public service, significantly more than 5 decades after the Palace originally explained he would steadily "wind down" his workload, nevertheless he remained keen to carry out a number of his own obligations.

But Philip does not walk with the aid of a stick as the Queen Mother did and was spotted last week driving himself around Windsor Great Park, leading to speculation he may have a problem with torn cartilage. He is thought to have been suffering with hip pain for a month, during which he missed church services on Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday. "That's more important than someone's chronological age".

There's a busy few months coming up for the royal family, as the Duke and Cambridge prepare to welcome their third child, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle marry next month. During Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in June 2012, he was hospitalized for a bladder infection.

A hip replacement completely rebuilds the hip joint.

The duke retired from official duties a year ago but has been seen in recent months driving his vehicle and attending some events with his family.

Recovery will depend on the individual patient but, in general, doctors get patients on their feet as quickly as possible and discharge them three to five days after the procedure.

Philip has been in generally good health for his age, but he was briefly hospitalised over Christmas in 2011 for angioplasty treatment of a blockage in his coronary arteries.
