Zumas supporters set off for Durban High Court

  • Former president Jacob Zuma will on Friday appear in court over 16 charges of fraud corruption and money laundering

During the 15-minute hearing, Zuma was not asked to plead but High Judge Themba Sishi said he should appear in court on 8 June after his review application has been examined on 15 May. It came after his financial adviser Schabir Shaik was found guilty of fraud and corruption in relation to the arms deal and alleged corrupt dealing with Zuma in 2005.

The corruption allegations were previously filed against Zuma but were dropped prior to his presidential run in 2009.

Answers to parliamentary questions reveal that the funding of Zuma's battles against his prosecution has so far cost taxpayers at least R32.4-million.

Zuma told thousands of supporters outside court in Durban that his opponents were telling lies and he would be proven innocent. Zuma is facing 16 charges of corruption, fraud and racketeering.

BE prepared for the long haul, as Jacob Zuma's legal team yesterday provided a possible glimpse of the tactics they will employ to keep the former president from a jail cell.

"I don't think we will see Zuma's criminal trial start or reach a conclusion this year", said William Booth, the head of the South African Law Society's criminal division.

"It is important that members who would prefer to go to court to pledge their own support, do so in their own capacity as individuals", said ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe in a video posted on the party's Facebook page.

Some Zuma supporters gathered near the courthouse in the coastal city of Durban on Friday to declare that the former leader is not guilty.

The Zuma of old is still here - the crowd pleaser, the charmer and tactical politician.

This was after the ruling African National Congress party forced Zuma from office in February largely due to his mounting legal challenges and multiple corruption scandals.

However, this time around the party led by the new president Cyril Ramaphosa has reportedly distanced itself from the controversy as the party prepares to contest the national elections in a year's time.

The message resonates among many people who resent the fact that much of the economy remains in the hands of the white minority despite the advent of democracy.

The charges were reinstated in 2016 as his grip on the ANC weakened.
