  • Tour bus driver is charged with DUI after a dozen people are injured when his vehicle flips over en route to Masters golf tournament

A tour bus headed to the Masters tournament flipped over on a Georgia interstate Thursday, injuring 15 people and snarling traffic as scores of fans made the pilgrimage to one of golf's premier events.

"I was thrown around when the bus flipped and was up against the other wall", Strickler said during a phone interview from Doctors Hospital of Augusta, where he was being treated Thursday night for severe lacerations on his back.

The bus driver, Steven Hoppenbrouwer, 61, of Gwinnett County, Georgia, was charged with DUI and a failure to maintain lane.

Another 10 victims were transported to Augusta University Hospital, where five are still in serious condition, a spokesperson said. Some passengers suffered broken bones and head injuries, Wright said, but none was life-threatening. One of those patients is in critical condition, one is in serious condition and one is in fair condition, according to WJBF, the ABC affiliate in Augusta/Aiken.

Physicians Hospital in Augusta claimed in a statement Thursday that six of the eight passengers obtained there have been in very good shape or had been dealt with and released.

The bus driver has been charged with driving under the influence, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Eighteen passengers traveling from Atlanta were on board, the state patrol said.

The bus, which was carrying a group from Atlanta to the tournament, is owned by Jet Executive Limousine, troopers said.

The bus was en route to the world-renown golf tournament, which started at the Augusta National Golf Club Thursday morning. WhitePages.com showed there were two places listed as Hoppenbrouwer's residence as of March.

At least one lane of traffic is blocked both directions.
