  • Facebook suspends data firm in wake of privacy scandal

Facebook is introducing an "unsend" button in Messenger, after CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other Facebook execs received backlash for having their own messages retracted, according to Techcrunch.

Wylie said it was hard to verify how many people had access to the Facebook information or derivatives of that data "because it was a lot of people", according to a partial transcript released by the network. "So although this has the potential to impact in the short term, I think in the long term, as long as Facebook can build and continue to iterate on a product that fulfills the needs of its users, it won't have a long-term impact on the advertising within the platform", Patterson said.

The company says it has been removing Zuckerberg's messages from the inboxes of various people for several years. Facebook said that Zuckerberg and the other executives would not use it until everyone else could. The end-to-end encrypted setting of Messenger even already has the ability to set messages to delete after a stipulated amount of time.

"The mitigating factor is that this data is voluntarily given to Facebook by its users, who should have known the goal of its use by the platform, but Facebook should have been a lot more forthcoming about that too", argues Ed Morrissey at Hot Air. By announcing the feature is coming to all users it seems like an attempt to make Zuckerberg appear as a beta tester of the feature to some.

Facebook added: "We are working with third parties to develop a list of key issues, which we will refine over time".

Facebook's subsidiary and instant messaging platform WhatsApp rolled out a similar feature called "Delete for everyone" in November 2017.

The statement continued, "This may take some time". This way, a message will disappear from the sender and receiver's inboxes after a certain amount of time. The company also claims that it has never managed or had access to the information used by Cambridge Analytica. The Sony messages included disparaging remarks about movie stars and other people in the entertainment industry.

"As Tufekci explains, Zuckerberg's first Facebook apology came in 2006 with the launch of the News Feed, the introduction of which came with little advance warning: "'This was a big mistake on our part, and I'm sorry for it, ' he wrote on Facebook's blog. "AggregateIQ works in full compliance within all legal and regulatory requirements in all jurisdictions where it operates". Zuckerberg also expressed his support for the Honest Ads Act bill now working its way through the Senate-despite Facebook having previously lobbied against it.

Though Facebook has not finalised how the feature will work, it would, or atleast its announcement would, cool things down for now.
