He said there are no excuses for the Spanish authorities to avoid "a political dialogue with the Catalan political leaders in order to find a political solution of our demands, not by criminal law". "It is correct that a parliament can debate calmly the candidate for the presidency".

Catalonia's former leader Carles Puigdemont is seen with supporters after a news conference in Berlin, Germany, April 7, 2018.

On Thursday, a German court ruled that he could not be extradited on grounds of rebellion, as the equivalent charge under German law, treason, requires a defendant to have committed violence.

Puigdemont can still be extradited on the less serious charge of misuse of funds to hold Catalonia's banned independence referendum past year.

Catalonia continues to be within an political deadlock significantly more than 5 months after Mr. Rajoy ousted Mr. Puigdemont's administration and placed that the place under direct principle by Madrid. "We always said we were ready", Puigdemont said.

Puigdemont renewed calls to back Sanchez at a press conference in Berlin Saturday, a day after he was released on bail from a German prison. He could still be extradited to Spain on charges of misusing state funds.

"This opens a new opportunity of dialogue".

Spain's Supreme Court has charged 14 Catalan separatists, including Puigdemont, with rebellion, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years. The Spanish Supreme Court earlier in March issued fresh arrest warrants against Puigdemont and some other individuals behind the independence bid. He was trying to drive from Finland to Belgium, where he had been living since fleeing to escape arrest in Spain.

The former leader left a German prison in Neumuenster on bail Friday, nearly two weeks after his arrest, after the Schwesig state court in Germany decided the charge of rebellion did not warrant extradition because the accusation isn't punishable under German law.

Puigdemont can move freely in Germany pending a decision on his extradition, though he must report to police once a week and inform prosecutors of any change in residence. The court, however, has not ruled out extradition on the charge of "embezzlement". Puigdemont can still be extradited on the less serious charge of misuse of funds.

After walking out of jail, Puigdemont called for the release of so-called political prisoners in Spain, notably those who were arrested for their involvement in the Catalan independence referendum.
