A four-alarm fire on the 50th floor of New York City's Trump Tower left one man dead and six firefighters injured, the FDNY said, the second blaze this year at President Trump's Fifth Avenue high-rise.

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told CNN that no members of the Trump family were present during the fire, and that the building's higher floors do not have fire sprinklers.

"There are four Firefighters with non-life-threatening injuries".

President Trump tweeted earlier that the fire was "very confined, well built building".

In a statement, the New York City Fire Department said: 'This was a very hard fire. It was ruled under control around 9 p.m., two hours after it was originally reported, the FDNY tweeted.

'As you can imagine, the apartment is quite large, we are 50 stories up.

Some fire-safety advocates wanted older apartment buildings to be retrofitted with sprinklers when the city began requiring them in new residential high-rises nearly 20 years ago. He thanked the firefighters for their courageous work in containing the blaze, and then pointed out that the building was a "well built building". "Firemen (and women) did a great job", the president wrote on Twitter at 6:42 p.m.

Todd Brassner, 67, was unconscious when pulled from his apartment in the Midtown skyscraper and rushed to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital.

The Brooklyn home had sprinklers but they were turned off at the time of the blaze.

The cause of the fire was not immediately available. "It's a well-built building", he said.

Meanwhile, the commercial portions of Trump Tower have their required fire sprinklers, the DOB rep said.

Nigro said firefighters and Secret Service members checked on the condition of Trump's apartment.

"The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke".

A fire in the tower's heating systems in January sent smoke billowing from the roof and injured three people, none seriously. 200 firefighters and EMS are on the scene'.
