  • Iranian Drone Shot Down in February by Israeli Air Force Was Carrying Explosives for Direct Attack

After giving the orders to strike targeted military facilities in Syria on Saturday, US President Donald Trump gave a direct message to the regimes of Russian Federation and Iran for aiding a "murderous regime" in Damascus.

Emphasising that the strikes are directed at the Syrian regime, Mattis said in conducting these strikes, the United States has gone to great lengths to avoid civilian and foreign casualties.

Tensions have been running high between Israel and its arch-foe Iran, a key backer of the Syrian regime which provides military advisers and "volunteer" ground forces to Damascus.

"This aggression is created to compensate for the defeat of the terrorists" in Eastern Ghouta, an area recently recaptured by Syrian government forces, Iran's foreign ministry said.

"The Syrian Arab Republic condemns in the strongest terms the brutal American-British-French aggression against Syria, which constitutes a flagrant violation of global law", the foreign ministry said. The organization has previously determined that chemical weapons have been used in Syria. The White House said he would consult further with allies.

May authorized the strikes without a vote from Parliament, which has been in recess.

The Russian military says Syria's Soviet-made air defense systems have downed 71 out of 103 cruise missiles launched by the United States and its allies.

Many politicians in Britain, including some in May's own Conservative Party, had called for parliament to be recalled from holiday to give authority to any military strike.

The Israeli military said Friday evening that following an "operational and intelligence-based investigation", its military has concluded that the "Iranian aircraft was armed with explosives and was tasked to attack Israeli territory".

The seemingly limited strikes with no apparent future strategy for how to deal with the wider civil war was a cause for relief and celebration by Assad supporters, but criticised by the Syrian Opposition.

Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until the Assad government stopped its use of chemical weapons.

The U.S., Great Britain and France fired 105 missiles at three sites in Syria early Saturday morning local time, Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the joint chiefs of staff, said Saturday at the Pentagon.

"U.S, allies will not gain any achievements from crimes in Syria".

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has expressed his support for the airstrikes on Syria authorized by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Syrian television reported that Syria's air defenses, which are substantial, responded to the attack.
