  • Potential for freezing rain Thursday, ice storm this weekend

As we previously reported, Environment Canada released an alert early this morning, warning residents of Southern Ontario that a "potentially historic ice storm" is set to hit tonight.

Another round of appreciable rain and potential thunderstorms is likely again later on Sunday.

Snow or ice pellets will end in the evening then it will be cloudy with blowing snow.

They say a moisture laden low pressure area over the Central Plains States will amble towards the lower Great Lakes this weekend pumping in cold Arctic air, forcing temperatures below freezing.

Unsafe winter driving conditions are expected on untreated roads Saturday and Sunday, worsened by fallen tree limbs. Exams scheduled for Saturday, April 14, will now take place on Thursday, April 26.

"There remains considerable uncertainty with regards to how long the freezing rain will last before changing over to rain on Sunday", it reads. There is likely to be a lull in precipitation this evening, with patchy freezing drizzle expected. Subsequent heavy rain will follow during the day April 15. Small streams and creeks, low-lying and poor drainage areas may see flooding Sunday night through Monday.

Power outages and tree damage are likely, according to the National Weather Service, due to the wind and ice. It may exceed that in some locales.

Environment Canada said there will be strong winds with gusts up to 85 km/h in some areas.
