  • Lawyers for Trump's Personal Attorney Set for Friday Court Appearance

Earlier this week, Cohen's offices were raided by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents who seized files relating to Cohen's work, prompting Trump to blast the action as a "witch hunt".

Cohen's lawyers will need to turn over the requested material by 10 a.m. Monday, and court will reconvene at 2 p.m. -with Cohen himself seated at the counsel's table.

A U.S. District Judge on Friday reluctantly agreed to give attorneys for Michael Cohen an extension to provide evidence bolstering their claim that much of the information seized from Cohen by federal agents Monday is protected by attorney-client privilege.

In addition to searching Cohen's office and hotel room, prosecutors also obtained warrants to seize material from his cellphones, tablet, laptop and a safe-deposit box, according to people briefed on the warrants. Officials redacted a section in the document explaining why they thought they could not trust Cohen to turn over records willingly.

On Friday, the Department of Justice announced Cohen had been under criminal investigation for several months in NY over his business dealings.

They were seeking information on payments made by Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels, who has said she had sex with Trump in 2006, a person familiar with the matter said. He has described it as an overreach by prosecutors into the privileged communications between Mr. Cohen and his client, Mr. Trump.

They said agents had already searched multiple email accounts maintained by Cohen. "They remained unsure what had been taken, an uncertainty that has heightened the unease around Mr. Trump".

Prosecutors emphasized that their investigation was focused on Cohen's business dealings, not his work as a lawyer.

In the filing with a court in NY, prosecutors blacked out a section describing what crime they believe Trump attorney Michael Cohen has committed.

One problem for Cohen - who is known to be very loyal to the president - is that the rap against him may include state charges, meaning that a presidential pardon wouldn't necessarily help his case.

"The searches are the result of a months-long investigation into Cohen, and seek evidence of crimes, many of which have nothing to do with his work as an attorney, but rather relate to Cohen's own business dealings", federal prosecutors wrote in court papers filed on Friday.

Judge Kimba Wood shouldn't agree, contended the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY.

"This has clearly been a delay tactic from the outset", said Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas McKay.

McDougal alleges in a lawsuit that Cohen has a cozy relationship with Davidson. In a footnote in its filing, the prosecutors expressed doubt that any communications between Trump and Cohen regarding a payoff to Daniels before the election would be covered under attorney-client privilege.

Michael Avenatti, a lawyer for Stormy Daniels, told Reuters on Thursday that Cohen's attorney told him that Cohen will plead the Fifth if his application for a stay is denied.
