  • Britain's government weighed the possibility of military action against Syria on Thursday

Director of the Joint Staff Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie confirmed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad still maintains "residual" capacity. "We've attacked the heart of the Syrians' chemical weapons program".

Damascus skies erupt with missile fire as the US launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the capital Syria, early Saturday, April 14, 2018. A combined operation with the armed forces of France and the United Kingdom is now underway.

President Trump, who said that the strikes were meant to be a "strong deterrent" against chemical warfare, now says "mission accomplished" and there "could not have had a better result".

"The three aggressors preempted the OPCW's mission in Ghouta, with the aim of hiding their lie", SANA said on Saturday.

The French Ambassador to the UN Francois Delattre said that the Syrian regime is using awful and destructive weapons against civilians, and that the list of its violations is long. "This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons used by that very bad regime".

The Syrian government and its allies have absorbed a US-led attack, and the targeted sites were evacuated days ago thanks to a warning from Russian Federation, a senior official in a regional alliance that backs Damascus said.

Trump indicated the strikes would continue until the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons ends. But Friday night, the White House released what it said was "a significant body of information" that pointed to the use of chlorine gas - and possibly also the deadly nerve agent sarin.

Obama gave a speech saying the United States should act against Syria but said congress should authorize any military action - congress didn't act.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, condemned Russian Federation on Friday over its support for Assad, saying before the U.N. security council that "Russia alone" was responsible for enabling the Syrian strongman. The targets included a scientific research facility near Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility west of the city of Homs, and a third location near Homs that contained both a command post and a chemical weapons equipment storage facility, the USA military said.

Syria has denied using chemical weapons.

At an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting Saturday, the USA envoy said the U.S.is "locked and loaded" if the Syrian regime is "foolish enough to test our will".

The strike was twice the size of a previous strike carried out by the Trump administration in April 2017 and, McKenzie noted, there has so far not been a response from military actors within Syria.

"We warned that such actions will not be left without consequences", he said.

"In the past year and a half Russian Federation has fully restored Syria's air defence system and continues to further upgrade it", Rudskoi said.
