  • Israel: Iran drone intercepted in Feb was Strike Assignment

In a statement on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the U.S., France and Britain demonstrated their commitment to the fight against chemical weapons.

"Israel maintains full freedom of action on its borders we will not comprise on less than this", Education Minister and security cabinet member Naftali Bennett said Sunday on Israeli radio.

U.S., British and French forces hit Syria with air strikes overnight in response to an alleged poison gas attack that killed dozens of people last week.

Netanyahu expressed his hope that Syrian President Assad would acknowledge that "his reckless efforts to acquire and use weapons of mass destruction, his wanton disregard for worldwide law and his provision of a forward base for Iran and its proxies endanger Syria".

U.S. President Donald Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until Assad's government stopped its use of chemical weapons.

In a written statement, Netanyahu said the decision taken by the US and backed by the United Kingdom and France shows that the commitment of these countries to combat chemical weapons is not limited to the declaration.

Hezbollah, like Iran and Russian Federation, is backing Assad in the war.

"This aggression is created to compensate for the defeat of the terrorists" in Eastern Ghouta, an area recently recaptured by Syrian government forces, Iran's foreign ministry said.

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Netanyahu and urged him to do nothing to destabilise Syria, according to a Kremlin statement.

The premier said he told May that the leading source of instability in the region is Iran, and that Assad needs to understand that when he lets Iran militarily entrench itself and its proxies in Syria, he is endangering Syria and the entire region.

Punitive US-led strikes in Syria on Saturday are justified and are an "important signal" to Iran, Syria and Lebanon's "Hezbollah", Israeli officials said.
