At a launch in north London, lawmakers from both the governing Conservative Party and opposition Labour joined with hundreds of others to press for what they described as a " people's vote" on Brexit.

Organisers said about 1200 people were at the event, including MPs from all leading parties.

The actor, famous for productions including Star Trek and X-Men, even said his fictional character Charles Xavier would have supported the Remain campaign. "If the public demand a People's Vote, politicians will fall in line".

Of respondents who voted to leave the European Union, 45% were opposed to the idea of a public vote, compared to 38% in favor.

"These people just want to keep re-running the referendum until they get the answer they want". It was a vote in the dark two years ago.

And Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas told attendees that Brexit was "not inevitable", adding: "We'll do everything we can in Parliament for a people's vote".

"We will be making the case in Parliament, but this is too big and too important to be determined exclusively by politicians", she said.

Conservative MP Anna Soubry told the crowd the United Kingdom was about to embark on a course that would "make you and your grandchildren... less prosperous than you are now".

"We'll do everything we can in Parliament for a people's vote".

An online poll from Opinium published to mark the launch suggests more than half of the British public (52%) backs a vote on the final deal, with 31% opposed.

Appearing alongside Mr Umunna on ITV's Peston on Sunday, she said: "A second referendum, Chukka, which is what you're really campaigning for, is never going to happen".

Stewart told the BBC he is supporting the People's Vote because the terms and conditions coming out of the negotiations are very different from those discussed during the 2016 referendum campaign.

Sir Patrick also said he was motivated by "history and emotion" to want to stay in the EU. "They want a people's vote". "We're now trying to deliver on that mandate from the people".

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who is steadfast in his belief that Britain can live long and prosper outside the European Union, riffed on another one of Star Trek's most famous lines in his response to Sir Patrick.

Mocking the referendum campaign group with a Star Trek gag, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said: "We will be able to boldly go again to areas that perhaps we've neglected over the last 45 years".
