After VAR debacle, Freiburg goalkeeper gifts Mainz second goal with frightful blunder

VAR confusion reigned in the Bundesliga on Monday evening as Mainz and Freiburg players had to be recalled from the half-time break after a penalty was belatedly awarded.

Referee Guido Winkmann called both sides back from the dressing room after consulting the video assistant referee (VAR) system and penalised Freiburg for handball. Referee Guido Winkmann initially allowed the game to play on, denying Mainz a penalty, before blowing for halftime shortly thereafter.

It took several more minutes for the message to get to the Freiburg players, who were already back in their dressing room, but they eventually made their way back onto the pitch as well.

In a crucial relegation encounter in the Bundesliga, Winkmann blew the half-time whistle with the game goalless. However, that was not the end of the first half action. The goal was covered with loo roll being thrown onto the pitch, a protest at scheduling apparently unrelated to the penalty decision.

Speaking to Eurosport, Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier said the side would have to "accept it with a heavy heart": "It leaves a bitter taste".

"But for us who try to attend every game in the stadium it's quite hard to travel on Monday to a match".

De Blasis followed the penalty, officially recorded in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time, with a second goal in the 78th minute to seal the win.

The Premier League agreed last week to delay the introduction of the... I can't understand why referees are involved in the decision-making process at all, if it is to be used for clear and obvious errors, surely the VAR has to tell the referee what the decision is.
