Amazon and Best Buy to sell TVs together

  • Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly and Amazon's Jeff Bezos came together Tuesday to discuss the deal

Amazon has cut a deal to sell voice-controlled TVs at Best Buy, the latest attempt by the online retailer to get its burgeoning suite of tech products out where people can see and touch them. The Fire Edition TVs by Insignia and Toshiba are created to work seamlessly with Amazon's own voice assistant Alexa. As Amazon rose in the electronics segment, Best Buy seemed doomed to cede share. "Clearly, Amazon has been a leader in the bolt-on business with the Fire TV sticks and boxes, but they were behind a little bit in getting out to televisions".

Best Buy and Amazon announced on Wednesday that they will begin working together to sell the next generation of Fire TV Edition smart TVs in the United States and Canada. Global variants of the TVs for other countries are yet to be announced.

Amazon and Best Buy want to sell you your next smart TV.

"We believe Fire TV Edition further strengthens the growing connection between home theater, home automation and voice control", stated Hubert Joly, Best Buy chairman and CEO.

The press release reveals that more than ten new TV models from Insignia (Best Buy's own brand) and Toshiba will become available in the next few months.

The new televisions will come with Fire TV built in, so streaming content can be searched and executed by voice through Amazon Alexa. Tens of thousands of Alexa skills are already accessible today, allowing you to have awesome entertainment experiences, view and control your smart home connected cameras, lighting, security systems, and more. Customer reviews, 1-Click shopping, personalized recommendations, Prime, Fulfillment by Amazon, AWS, Kindle Direct Publishing, Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV, Amazon Echo, and Alexa are some of the products and services pioneered by Amazon.

In addition to its own stores (an Amazon Go cashier-less convince store opened its doors earlier this year), Amazon is creating partnerships with traditional retailers in a sector that is threatened by its dominance.

It will continue to add new Alexa skills, software features, and applications to the smart TV platform after launch to provide even more value for money to customers. Will you be buying one?
