Today she was poised to be the first senator to bring a child on the Senate floor, after a rule change that allows senators to bring children under 1 year-old onto the Senate floor.

The U.S. Senate will now allow babies onto the Senate Floor in response to a rule change proposed by an Illinois Senator.

Kaitlin Fahey, Duckworth's chief of staff, explained in a statement given to CNN that the rule change was introduced "to ensure no senator with an infant is prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities-and send a message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies".

The 50-year-old senator previously said she was anxious that outdated Senate rules would make it harder to do her job. "Not sure what the policy is on duckling onesies but I think we're ready". Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., who gave birth last month.

As recently as 2009, the Senate swimming pool was male-only; it took an intervention from former senator Kay Hagan and senator Chuck Schumer to make the pool co-ed. Why?

When she was on the Senate floor, a group of senators including Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and senators across party lines; apparently Klobchar had to privately insist that nursing and changing diapers wouldn't happen on the Senate floor, according to the New York Times. Pat Roberts, (R-Kan.) told the AP.

"Why would I object to it?" Sen. Tammy Duckworth brought her newborn daughter with her to vote on the Senate floor on Thursday. As such, without the new rule in place, it would have been more hard for Duckworth to do her job.

"But what if there are 10 babies on the floor of the Senate?" he asked, the Chicago Tribune reports. The trail-blazing senator is an Iraq War veteran who lost both of her legs and damaged her arm in combat.

"I think we ought to accommodate people as much as we can", said Alabama Republican Richard Shelby ahead of the rule change.

There was more, voiced privately, Klobuchar said - including whether Duckworth meant to change Maile's diaper or nurse her new baby on the Senate floor. "I think it would do us good, every once in a while, to see a pacifier next to the antique inkwells on our desks, or a diaper bag next to a brass spittoon that hasn't been used in decades", IL senator Dick Durbin said in a statement.
