Video footage has emerged of two Jewish men being violently assaulted in an apparent anti-Semitic attack in Berlin.
Germany's capital was on track to or had already succeeded at becoming the favorite destination for Israelis coming to Europe, but a string of recent anti-Semitic assaults and incidents in Berlin is now triggering renewed fears among many Jews here.
Police said after the belt attack, the suspect's two companions took him away.
Armush filmed one of them men whipping him with a belt while calling out, "Yahudi", or "Jew" in Arabic, before he is stopped by a passerby.
The incident took place at the Helmholtzplatz, a public park in southern Berlin, near Mr Armush's home.
Antisemitism remains a sensitive issue in Germany given that more than six million Jews were murdered during the Nazi-era Holocaust. The video shows only a part of the confrontation, and it's unclear ensued before the blows.
"I am a little afraid now, and disappointed", he said, adding that he nevertheless planned to continue wearing the kippa in Berlin.
Israel's Kan public broadcaster later found the teen, Adam Armush, and interviewed him near his home. Local police are investigating the attack, which was recorded by the victim. "I'm still in shock". "It was an experience for me to wear the skullcap and go out into the street yesterday". "On average, we learn of three to four incidents daily". We didn't talk to anyone, didn't answer them. So when they kept cursing us, my friend asked them to stop cursing, and that got them angry. "They started to get angry and one of them ran to me and I knew it was important to film it because there would be no way to catch him by the time police arrived". "I was saying it's really safe and I wanted to prove it, but it ended like that", Armoush told German TV.
The assailant was one of three men who had cursed repeatedly at the victim, Adam Armush, and his friend as they walked to a nearby train station.
"This case must be met with the full force of the law", he told AFP. He urged policymakers and civil society to unite in finding an adequate response to a growing number of anti-Semitic incidents, particularly pronounced in circles of young Muslim males.
