Equity indices close higher, RIL top gainer

  • Indian shares rise; TCS market cap crosses $100 bln

The broader 50-shares NSE Nifty was up 23.90 points (0.22 percent) to 10608.60. Bharti Airtel rose almost 3 per cent while Reliance Industries gained almost 1 per cent.

The top losers were: Wipro, down 3.30 per cent at Rs 287.05; Infosys, down 2.49 per cent at Rs 1,153.90; Tata Steel, down 1.23 per cent at Rs 598.25; State Bank of India, down 0.87 per cent at Rs 240.60; and Tata Consultancy Services, down 0.87 per cent at Rs 3,385.65. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped 0.7 per cent to its lowest in nearly three weeks, with tech-heavy Taiwan shares hitting two-month lows on worries about slowing semi-conductor demand.

The BSE Sensex after opening at 34,593.17 points touched a high of 34,611.73 and low of 34,536.70 points.

On a net basis, domestic institutional investors had bought shares worth a net Rs 111.01 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 21.02 crore on Friday.

The BSE metal index fell 1.5 per cent.

The rupee weakened by 4 paise to 66.16 against the USA dollar in early trade due to foreign capital outflows.

The Nikkei fell 0.2 per cent to 22,114.03 in midmorning trade.

Private sector lender HDFC Bank dropped 0.8 percent despite reporting a 20 percent rise in its Q4 profit. Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.95 per cent.

Benchmark indices on Wednesday opened lower tracking weak global cues.

However, the gains were capped by selling pressure in metals, IT, teck, power, consumer durables and PSU stocks.

On Tuesday, Sensex rallied 165.87 to settle at 34,616.64 and the Nifty ended 29.65 points higher at 10,614.35.

Asian stocks dipped as investors braced for a bevy of earnings from the world's largest corporations, while keeping a wary eye on U.S. bond yields as they approach peaks that have triggered market spasms in the past.
