For Oswalt, the news of DeAngelo's arrest feels deeply personal.

Comedian Patton Oswalt proudly and tenderly spoke those words to his late wife in an Instagram video on Wednesday. "Her book and the article that led to the book really amped up all the interest in the case and really put a lot of focus on this", said Oswalt. She had been in the middle of her hunt for the killer and her book, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer".

Oswalt made an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday, and talked about the arrest of former police officer Joseph James DeAngelo, after police said detectives matched his DNA to evidence from the investigation.

Oswalt also pointed out the irony that the arrest happened on DNA Day - the United States holiday celebrating advancements in DNA research - since McNamara firmly believed DNA evidence would play a key role in uncovering the killer's identity.

Though he was too "neck deep in grief" and dealing with the realities of suddenly becoming a single father to be actively involved, Oswalt says he leaned on her publisher and other collaborators to get the book done.

Oswalt, Haynes, and another researcher called Billy Jenkins, published I'll Be Gone In The Dark posthumously in February this year, two months before DeAngelo's arrest.

Fans of the book Oswalt helped to complete lauded him and McNamara after reports about the arrest in the high-profile case broke. It has sold around 150,000 copies and was optioned by HBO, which is adapting it into a documentary series.

"I'm a rational man, but I can't help but feel this transcends coincidence", collaborator Paul Haynes wrote on Twitter.

However, on Tuesday, at an event in Chicago to promote the book, Oswalt told the crowd that he thought the killer would be caught soon.

The resulting book is a chilling and vivid narrative of a serial killer's crimes, and a revealing account of Ms. McNamara's obsession with the case and the psychological toll it took on her. "There were insights and angles that she could keep bringing to this case". "Curiosity turned to clawing hunger".

When DeAngelo was arrested, Sheriff Jones said officers simply waited for him to walk outside his house. Jones said it had not.

By sheer coincidence, the trio gathered in IL on Tuesday night to celebrate the book, just hours before DeAngelo was taken into custody.
