  • Joseph James De Angelo Jr was arrested in California Tuesday night on two murder charges. The now-72-year-old is suspected of being the Golden State Killer

Dubbed the Golden State Killer, the suspect eluded capture throughout the years.

Sacramento County Sheriffs deputies leave the Citrus Heights, Calif., home of Joseph James DeAngelo. The Golden State Killer, also known as the "East Area Rapist", is suspected of killing at least 12 people, raping at least 45, and burglarizing hundreds of homes in the '70s and '80s, The Bee reported.

In 2016, as the 40th anniversary of the killer's first known assault in Sacramento County approached, law enforcement officials renewed their search for the attacker and offered a $50,000 (£35,900) reward for his arrest and conviction.

"We knew we were looking for a needle in a haystack, but we also knew that needle was there", Schubert said.

The creepy risk towards the yapping pooch was par for the course with Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, neighbor Grant Gorman instructed the Sacramento Bee.

After watching DeAngelo for several days, deputies took him by surprise on Tuesday.

"This was a truly a convergence of emerging technology and dogged determination by detectives", Jones added. "It wasn't swift but it will be sure".

The 72-year-old DeAngelo has been charged with eight murders in Sacramento, Orange, and Ventura Counties. The charges include special circumstances of multiple murders, murder during the commission of a rape, and murder during the commission of a burglary.

The late writer, Michelle McNamara, coined the nickname the "Golden State Killer" to describe the murderer previously known to police by a different acronym: EARS/ONS.

In 1976 he served as a police officer in the city of Auburn until he was sacked in 1979 for allegedly stealing a hammer and a can of dog repellent, The Associated Press reported, citing Auburn Journal articles from the time. "We don't have a full picture yet".

Who Is Joseph James DeAngelo?

Bruce Harrington's brother and sister-in-law were two of the alleged victims.

On Twitter, the comedian appeared to find solace in the similarities between the end of the book - which includes an imagined scene of the killer's arrest - and how authorities actually came to detain Mr DeAngelo.

"Sleep better tonight, he isn't coming through the window". "He's now in jail and he's history".

In 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and California officials renewed their search for the East Area Rapist and announced a $50,000 reward for his arrest and conviction.

Reports from the time show DeAngelo was sacked from the Auburn Police Department in 1979 after being arrested for stealing a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a drug store.

When the killer went underground, police kept looking, and in 2016 the Federal Bureau of Investigation offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Colleen Fernandez, who lives in DeAngelo's neighborhood, told ABC News, "We walked by that house all the time. but we never saw him".

The as-yet-unidentified item discarded by DeAngelo that had a sample of his DNA on it - enough to provide the evidence leading to his arrest.

"He is a very risky man, and he had an arsenal of guns at his home", Holes said.

Jane Carson-Sandler who was raped by the East Area Rapist in 1976 told the Island Packet that she was "overwhelmed with joy" about the arrest 42 years after she was attacked.

Holes had been tracking the notorious "Golden State Killer" for decades and it finally felt like authorities were closer than ever to solving the case.
