  • Yogi govt wades into Jinnah row as AMU students mull approaching SC

Senior RLD leader Mairajuddin Ahmad today claimed that the controversy over a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was part of a conspiracy, which should be investigated.

Not just that, he also questioned why Jinnah must be remembered in India when no organization in Pakistan remembers Indian leaders who played key roles in Independence. "It is unfortunate that certain people are standing by the side of a person (Muhammad Ali Jinnah) who was responsible for the division of this country", Trivedi was quoted as saying by ANI. "I announce a reward of Rs 1 lakh for the one who burns down the poster".

The comment comes after UP CM Adityanath on the matter of Jinnha portrait said that state can't intervene in matters of Central university.

UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also said that Jinnah's portrait must be removed from the AMU office as he was the "nation's enemy". "For the next fortnight, Jinnah will be brought back from the grave and real issues will be sidelined", he said. "Internet services were suspended from 2 pm and it will remain so till midnight on Saturday", district magistrate Chandra Bhushan Singh said. Predictably this led to violence between the activists and AMU students and also a war of words. We have assembled here to expose this politics and how right-wing people entered the campus with an intention to disturb the peaceful environment. Police resorted to lathi charge and also used tear gas shells against the varsity students who were demanding action against the armed members of the right wing extremist organization. Section 144 of the CrPC (armed unlawful assembly) is in force in Aligarh.

The students offered Friday prayers at the scene of the dharna in which a large number of teachers and other members of the AMU fraternity participated. The AMU students alleged that the protesters were from Hindu Yuva Vahini, and were allowed to leave a police station after being initially detained.
