  • Mike Pompeo paves the way in Pyongyang for Trump-Kim summit

Also high on the agenda would be Pompeo's recent trip to North Korea, where he met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un again to finalize plans for the upcoming North Korea-US summit.

"They are really three incredible people".

Under an American flag and dark night sky, US President Donald Trump personally welcomed home three American detainees Thursday morning after they were released from North Korea.

The men returned after USA secretary of state Mike Pompeo was in Pyongyang to discuss Mr Trump's plans to meet Mr Kim. They also thanked the president and God for Kim's safe return. "We have a chance at something very great for the world". Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un.

Speaking with the former detainees by his side at Joint Base Andrews near Washington, Trump called it a "great honor" to welcome the men to the U.S.

Until now, the only American released by North Korea during Mr Trump's presidency has been Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old university student who returned to the U.S. in a coma last year after 17 months of captivity. A White House spokeswoman said they would be taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in nearby Maryland for further medical evaluation.

Now that the U.S. and North Korea plan to hold a summit to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, however, Trump's tone has changed. "Very exciting!" Trump said in another tweet.

As the details are filled in for his face-to-face with Donald Trump, Mr Kim visited China on Monday and Tuesday.

Trump's announcement came hours after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo returned home from North Korea with three detained Americans.

Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old American student who was detained in North Korea for 17 months, died in June 2017 after he was released by Kim's regime.

The trio released a statement via the State Department thanking Trump and his administration for their release shortly after they touched down in Alaska for a refueling stop on their way to Washington.

On the USA relationship with North Korea, Mr Trump said: "We're starting off on a new footing".

Trump, who delivered on a long-held promise this week by ending the United States' involvement in the Iran nuclear deal, has sought to deliver on another by improving relations with North Korea after almost seven decades of mutual antagonism. Hardliners are likely see possession of a nuke as the only guarantee against US-led efforts to topple the regime.
