Trump Talks to Blankenship After Pushing for His Defeat in West Virginia

  • AG Patrick Morrisey wins Republican nomination for US Senate seat in W.Va.

But Todd Rokita and Luke Messer were defeated by Mike Braun, a wealthy businessman and former state lawmaker who ran as the outsider.

Now, Trump has to decide how aggressively he'll back Morrisey over Manchin.

Trump's calls on Wednesday, several Republicans said, were partly aimed at healing the wounds following a deeply divisive primary.

Blankenship added that while he shares many of Trump's views, "I refrain from taking positions based on fake news and swampers' rhetoric".

The results of the primaries in North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia offer important insight into the political landscape and the American future.

The day's slate of early season elections tested the limits of the anti-establishment fervor that has defined the Trump era.

As a sign of the political trends, Gov. Jim Justice, a former Republican who switched parties and ran as a Democrat in his successful 2016 run, switched back to the GOP just in time for that rally. State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey beat Rep. At this point, you might have suspected that Blankenship has contracted President Trump's campaign-trail pathology of foot-in-mouth, not to mention his penchant for accruing new offenses in the act of justifying old ones. "He has come to the state four times, and each time it has been a tremendous boost". Overall, more Democrats voted than Republicans. He urged support for Morrisey or Jenkins instead. The GOP now controls five of the six offices.

North Carolina Republicans weighed in on Republican Rep. Robert Pittenger, who faced a primary challenger who nearly upset him two years ago. Pittenger is the first sitting member of Congress to lose his seat so far in the 2018 election cycle. - More than 8 in 10 voters (84%) say the economy will be "extremely" or "very" important to their votes, while 64% say the same of the President.

In Indiana, Democratic Sen.

Another three-way contest wrapped up in IN, where Braun, a distributing and logistics executive, loaned his campaign more than $5 million of his own money en route to defeating Reps.

"I'm off of probation at midnight", Blankenship, who was serving out a sentence for the UBB-related misdemeanor. In Indiana, Vice President Mike Pence's brother Greg Pence won the Republican primary for a congressional seat in eastern Indiana.

One Ohio voter, Jeffrey Whipple, of Toledo, said he supported Democratic candidate Richard Cordray, who led the federal consumer watchdog under President Obama, in the Democrats' gubernatorial primary against former Rep. Dennis Kucinich. He now faces GOP primary victor Jim Renacci, currently a House member from Ohio's 16th District. Race moves from Lean Republican to Toss-Up. Troy Balderson won the crowded Republican primary.

And on the local level, a woman who accused Trump of sexually harassing her more than a decade ago claimed the Democratic nomination in a race to represent an area southeast of Toledo in the state House of Representatives.

A bright spot for Republicans in swing-state Ohio: GOP turnout was considerably stronger than Democratic voting in the open governor's race. Of the 22 races now rated as Toss-Ups, 20 are currently held by Republicans.

Blankenship predicts he cannot only win the primary but also defeat incumbent Democratic U.S. Joe Manchin in November "without the support of the establishment". Sherrod Brown in November.

That menu of options apparently includes anything from bankrolling anti-Morrisey television ads to either running as or supporting a third party candidate. Problem is, Don Blankenship, now running for Senate, can't win the General Election in your state... Yet Tuesday's turnout bodes well for Manchin. Standing beside Morrisey and Jenkins, he called on voters to oust Manchin.

Manchin coasted to the Democratic nomination, but he remains a top Republican target this fall.

"He's got that liability", Smith said.

"In West Virginia, his one tweet single-handedly swung the dynamics of a race", Stepien said.

Trump and his party leaders have been more united against Blankenship in recent weeks.

The head of the Senate Republican campaign arm had highlighted Blankenship's criminal history.

Manchin also wouldn't directly attack Blankenship for his role in failing to prevent the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine that killed 29 people in 2010.

Blankenship continues to blame government regulators for the disaster, even in his concession speech.

Manchin said he and Blankenship "had our differences on the issues" but that people "cannot question Don's conservatism and being a Republican".

"I think the president is going to be a huge ally in this race", he said in an interview. "Probation ends at 12:01 a.m. tonight".
