  • The Type 001A carrier leaves the port of Dalian for sea trials yesterday

The provider, understood just as "Type 001A", set out for the trials from a port in northeastern China at around 6.45 am (2245 GMT Saturday), inning accordance with state broadcaster CCTV.

What will be at test is the carrier 's reliability and stability with regards to its power systems.

Now the carrier, currently identified as "Type 001A" will undergo a series of tests at sea, before being officially commissioned into service by the Chinese Navy (PLAN) in 2020.

The completely home-grown aircraft carrier has departed for sea trials this morning, state-run China Daily said in a brief report. According to state owned media Xinhuanet, construction began in April of past year, to make it ready for for its trial mission at sea, equipment debugging, outfitting and mooring tests were completed.

The possession of a homegrown aircraft carrier - which the Chinese Ministry of Defense has said displaces 55,000 tonnes - places China among the few military powers with such vessels, including the US, Russia and Britain. The ship will also carry several types of helicopters. The new Chinese carrier can neither sale for longer without refueling than the above mentioned USA carriers, nor can it carry as many planes.

The trials, along with the broader military build-up, follow the course of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who stated this April that the necessity to have a powerful navy "has never been as urgent as it is today".
