  • Will Iran and Israel Go to War? Trump Backs Israel's Right to Use Force As Rockets Fly Across Border From Syria

In total, 42 people, including 19 Iranians, were killed over two days of strikes - from Tuesday to Thursday - according to the Observatory. Israel however, which has always been concerned about Iranian influence in the Middle East welcomed Trump's decision.

Thousands later demonstrated across the country to protest Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

The Israel Air Force on Wednesday night attacked dozens of Iranian targets in Syria, including intelligence outposts, military camps and weapons depots. Now, with President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from it, Netanyahu may be emboldened to pursue his confrontation with Iran. Iranian officials have rejected any new accord.

Israel, which nearly never comments on strikes inside Syria, did not admit to carrying out Tuesday's attack, but it occurred shortly after the Israeli military went on "high alert" in response to "unusual movements of Iranian forces in Syria".

In a lengthy statement Friday, the Iranian government warned that it would take "whatever reciprocal measures it deems expedient" if it is not fully compensated for the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement as provided for in the accord.

Tehran has not completely walked away from the nuclear deal, since the Europeans are still participating.

A hard-line Iranian cleric threatened his country would retaliate if Israel "does anything foolish".

But the 1979 Islamic Revolution ousting the shah ended that. Hostile rhetoric has escalated over the decades since.

At the same time, the government said it has tasked the president of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran with "taking all necessary steps in preparation for Iran to pursue industrial-scale enrichment without any restrictions".

But unlike Israel and its Arab neighbors, the two countries have never had a direct confrontation. Israel said Iranian Quds Forces deployed inside Syria fired about 20 rockets at IDF positions.

Israeli airstrikes struck Iranian military installations inside Syria on Thursday - its biggest coordinated assault on Syria since the 1973 Mideast war - in retaliation for an Iranian rocket barrage on Israeli positions in the occupied Golan Heights.

Although Iran may not be a match for Israel's military power, it has a variety of allies and ways to hit back if corned by the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia, Iran's regional rival.

With the capture of the three suburbs, the only area outside government control in Damascus is that of the neighborhood of Hajar al-Aswad and the nearby Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk that are partially controlled by the Islamic State group. In Iraq, Iran sponsors a range of Shiite militias and has close ties to the political leadership. Saudi Arabia already accuses Iran of providing missiles that Yemeni rebels have fired toward Riyadh.
