Sam Bennett described his reaction, "I feel relieved I've been so close so many times at the Giro to get really get the timing right was key with so many fast sprinters here and it's not easy to beat Viviani because he really knows what he's doing but my time came, thoughs at one point I thought it would never come". Bennett was the last to launch his sprint but the Irish rider managed to edge out Elia Viviani and claim his first win in a Grand Tour.

Thibaut Pinot was third on the 164-kilometer (102-mile) route from Caltanissetta.

The 28-year-old comfortably saw his way through the flat 159km course from Pizzo to Praia a Mare to finish in the peloton in 30th position. "I had a bit of a gap so I took the chance and it worked out".

"It was very hard to get Viviani's wheel, everyone wanted that wheel, and we had to fight for it".

"I just missed it, sadly, but it's certainly within reach later ... and really I'm so pleased to be up there with the best again on one of the most iconic climbs around and in the Giro d'Italia".

New Zealand cyclist George Bennett has maintained his top 10 placing at the Giro d'Italia after stage seven on Saturday morning (NZ time).

Yates' Mitchelton-Scott teammate, Esteban Chaves, remained third overall, 26 seconds behind.

Yates, who won the young rider classification at last year's Tour de France, leads defending champion Tom Dumoulin by 16 seconds.

Team Sky's Chris Froome continued to be off the pace and is sitting in eighth place, 1m 10s behind Yates. "The guys then did an awesome job just to keep the break within three minutes, and finally we got some help from other teams". Rohan Dennis, who held the jersey heading into the stage, fell away during the final climb and is now 53s down on Yates.

"Tomorrow, if I have the legs, I might try something".

As Sam Bewley comments when interviewed after following the end of the stage, "it's a long way to go to Rome, but things are looking good" for the team.
