  • Fayette chapter of Fraternal Order of Police to host memorial Tuesday

Governor Dannel P. Malloy has announced he is directing U.S. and state flags in CT to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national observance that pays tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

During the service, the names of all law enforcement officers from the Mountain State killed in the line of duty since 1863 will be read.

Hundreds from the law enforcement community attended the ceremony along with family and friends of those who sacrificed their lives for their community. We all know that in the performance of that duty we lose the lives of some fine officers every day.

Allery was fatally shot by 28-year-old Melvin Gene Delong, of Belcourt, after a pursuit on January 18, 2017.

Two of the four officers honored passed away in 2017. Chief Jeff Bunn and the State Center Police Department, along with Chief Mike Ball and the Melbourne Police Department, are all providing valuable public safety services in their communities.

But it is good work, important work, satisfying work: to help someone in distress, to solve a crime, keep the peace, protect life and property, enforce the law, help do justice.

Officers say given the current political climate, this is a time to remember what law enforcement does on a daily basis.

"Today we join jurisdictions across our nation in recognizing the service and sacrifice of those in law enforcement", said Councilmember Reagan Dunn.

Kennedy in 1962 designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

This year 71 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers were honored, "It's kind of humble to be able to work here because of the sacrifices people have made before us", Officer Sergeant Rick Sweet said.

Fallen law enforcement officers from Hawkins County are Gerald Gibson, John Wesley Wright and Drew Harrell. I am proud to serve alongside the dedicated professionals working in the police department.

May 13-19 is National Police Week, a week to honor our nations finest heroes. The citizens of Marshall County are very fortunate to have such an outstanding law enforcement organization as the Marshall County Sheriff's Office serving in this community.
