The two communities in which the deaths occurred reported severe power outages. An Eversource spokesman says it may take days to get power back to everyone.

A man who had been mowing his lawn and sought refuge in his truck was killed when a tree fell on the vehicle in Danbury, Connecticut, said Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton, according to the Hartford Courant newspaper. The girl and her mother had arrived at their house and were unloading their vehicle when the tree fell.

There was a three-year-old passenger in the vehicle who did not appear injured and was transported to Danbury Hospital for evaluation. Two people were fatally struck by falling trees in CT; two others were fatally struck by trees in Newburgh, in Orange County, where an 11-year-old girl died after a tree fell on her outside her home, ABC 7 reports.

No names were released.

By Wednesday morning, the Mass. Emergency Management Agency reported roughly 400 power outages statewide, mostly in eastern counties.

Residents in the Northeast cleaned up Wednesday, a day after powerful storms pounded the region with torrential rain and marble-sized hail, leaving at least four people dead and more than 200,000 homes and businesses without power.

By daybreak, more than 370,000 residents were without power in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, down from more than 600,000 on Tuesday night. In Connecticut, the state's two major utilities reported 90,000 without electricity, most in the western part of the state.

Downed trees and utility poles impacted MA as well, though the severity did not reach the level reported in other northeast regions.

Lightning strikes from the storms causes several fires in New Jersey and Massachusetts, AP said.

Many schools were closed or had delayed openings Wednesday as crews continue the lengthy effort to address the damage from Tuesday's deadly chain of storms. Shortly after, the airport said that flight operations are attempting to return to normal, but there are now a few delays.

Commuters at normally busy Grand Central Terminal packed the station for the evening rush, but were left stranded when Metro-North shut down all three commuter lines because of the severe weather.
