Ramadan is considered one of the holiest month on the Islamic calender, and begins for some people Today Wed May 16 2018 or this Thursday, depending on if we spot the moon tonight.

Sending separate messages of congratulations to their counterparts in Islamic countries, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Iranian First Vice-President Es'hagh Jahangiri extended felicitations on the onset of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

On Tuesday, President Duterte greeted Muslims in the advent of Ramadan, expressing hope they would intensify "resolve to achieve spiritual cleansing and growth".

Muslims in Pakistan, Bangladesh and other Asian countries will look for the crescent moon on Wednesday evening to confirm the start date of Ramadan 2018.

Dr Mahathir also reminded Muslims to practice moderation in everything they do during this blessed month of Ramadan, as well as facing up to hunger and thirst and abstaining from doing things prohibited by Islam. Religious authorities in Egypt and Syria both declared the fast would begin Thursday.

Fasting is obligatory for all Muslims except the mentally disabled, elderly, ill people, pregnant or lactating women, women in their menstrual period and young children.

Ramadan is observed a day earlier in some parts of the world due to a moon-sighting methodology that leads countries to announce the start of the holy month on differing days. "You won't be able to find it anywhere in Islam that allows a Muslim to kill another Muslim, therefore, these attacks are prohibited and especially in the holy month of Ramadan it is completely forbidden". Eid al-Fitr, which means "festival of breaking the fast", marks the end of the month of Ramadan. They also try to avoid evil thoughts and deeds during the holy month.

Before dawn to prepare for the next day of fasting, families often wake in the night for a light meal known as "suhoor", eating fruits and vegetables, or a small dish with beans, lentils, bread or rice. Surprisingly, 41% of Muslims in the US who declared before that religion is "not too/ not at all important" observe Ramadan by fasting during daylight hours.
