An audio snippet with just two syllables has ignited an internet meltdown, dividing social media users into staunchly opposed camps: do you hear "Yanny" or "Laurel"?

He played it for his peers, who disagreed over whether the syllables formed "Yanny" or "Laurel".

Then, the first dissenter is shown: Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley.

In a video posted to Twitter, the White House staff revealed whether they were hearing "Laurel" or "Yanny". "All I hear is Yanny".

"Who's yanny? I hear coffefe". The word Yanny, the second frequency, has nearly exactly the same pattern as the L, R, L in Laurel. Higher frequency sounds in the recording make people hear "Yanny", whereas lower frequencies cause others to hear "Laurel".

The White House had some fun Thursday with the president's infamous Twitter flub - while rounding up West Wing opinion on an audio clip that has hijacked the Internet.
